Random Number Between 1 and 12

Twelve outcomes, each with an 8.33 percent chance. This is not the same as rolling two dice, even though both stop at twelve, and the difference is large.

1 to 12 1

12 possible values, each equally likely. Tick nothing and repeats can happen; that is what random means.

Flat 8.33 percent, and why that matters

Every value from 1 to 12 has the same 8.33 percent chance here. Two six-sided dice also top out at 12, so people reach for dice as a substitute. They are not interchangeable. Two dice cannot produce 1 at all, and the totals in the middle crowd out the ends.

Total This page Two dice
1 8.33% impossible
2 8.33% 2.78%
7 8.33% 16.67%
12 8.33% 2.78%

So 12 is three times more likely on this page than it is on two dice, and 7 is only half as likely. If you actually want the dice shape, with 7 as the peak, use roll 2d6. If you want a flat twelve from a physical object, that is a twelve-sided die: roll a d12.

Repeats

Two draws match 8.33 percent of the time. By the fifth draw the chance that some value has repeated is 61.81 percent. Seeing all twelve values takes about 37 draws on average.

What twelve is usually for

  • Picking a month
  • Picking an hour on a clock face
  • Twelve questions, twelve tasks, twelve days

For a day within that month, use 1 to 31, or set any range you like on the dice roller if you want dice rather than numbers.
